Oriental Darter soaks in the last rays of the sun on a cold winter evening in India’s Keoladeo Ghana National Park, Bharatpur, Rajasthan. Darters spend most of their day diving into the brackish waters to catch fish and frogs. They can hold their breaths underwater for several minutes. After 20-30 minutes in the water, they come out and perch up on a tree. I had observed the behavior of this specific darter for the past hour, and its particular liking to a dead tree. I positioned myself accordingly, knowing that the sun would set somewhere behind its perch
